Hello, my name is Samuel Kirby. In the Summer 2006 I completed a long-distance cycle ride from Lands End (in Cornwall) to John'O Groats (Scotland) from South to North in the UK.
The aim was to raise funds to purchase bikes for the S.K.E.P. children to enable them to cycle to and from their school (Baga Baga) in Tamale, Northern Ghana. The children often live many kilometres from the school and the time taken to get there means they sometimes have to miss lessons.
On completing the challenge there was enough sponsorship raised for Oluu to purchase 38 well-built Dutch-style roadster bicycles from Ghana's commercial town; Kumasi. They came complete with baskets, spare tubes and pumps and a tool kit to service them all.
Thanks to S.K.E.P. the children were given basic safety training, and shown how to remove tyres and carry out puncture repairs.
Having just received some heart-warming letters of thanks from some of the Children who received cycles, I can tell you honestly, that was the best Christmas Present I could have received last year. I look forward to more involvement with S.K.E.P. this year.
Please see my site for more details on my trip (and scroll to the bottom of the page for the link):
If you have any good fundraising ideas for any of the various projects happening at S.K.E.P. (see the sponsorship page) please feel free to email in with your suggestions, we would be delighted to hear from you...
